New Orleans Mural Arts Program
Lower Ninth Ward Levee Mural Project
Please note this project is currently on hold, but here are the overall intentions for bringing a wonderful art project to the People of New Orleans:
NoLA Rising is proposing the development of a 3900-foot long mural on the Industrial Canal levee wall in the Lower Ninth Ward. The mural will feature the work of 65-260 artists, each of whom will be painting his or her interpretation of a home. We will be working in close conjunction with members of the Lower Ninth Ward community, since we consider their input and participation to be invaluable elements of the project.
The Lower Ninth Ward Industrial Canal Levee Wall is one of the most famous walls in the world. It is currently a blank concrete slab whose function is to hold back future flood waters. Beautifying the Levee Wall with a mural that is designed and executed through the collective efforts of New Orleans community members will enhance the neighborhood’s aesthetic quality and amplify the voice of an area of the city whose residents have often felt neglected. The mural will create an unprecedented visual spectrum and will be a beacon that proclaims to the world that our culture will not only endure, but flourish in the face of any and all adversity.
